Online EEG Educational Learning Platforms Review

A recent study published in Neurology Education examined the current landscape of online EEG learning platforms for neurology residents and fellows, providing one of the first comprehensive reviews of publicly available EEG educational resources. Notably, several members of the EEGmaster faculty contributed to this important educational research effort. The review identified 15 dedicated EEG learning platforms and found substantial variability in educational design, content breadth, technical functionality, and learner assessment. While many platforms offer valuable introductory EEG instruction, the authors highlighted persistent gaps in key areas such as pediatric and neonatal EEG, quantitative EEG (qEEG), intraoperative monitoring (IOM), EEG manipulation tools, and meaningful learner feedback.
Among the platforms evaluated, EEGmaster emerged as one of the most comprehensive free educational resources available, offering a broad combination of educational content and technical functionality. Our platform includes automated knowledge assessment, extensive video-based instruction, interactive EEG review capabilities, pediatric EEG education, ICU EEG content, quantitative EEG (qEEG) training, and one of the few freely accessible collections of intraoperative monitoring (IOM) educational materials. Together, these resources provide learners with exposure to a wide range of EEG applications extending beyond routine adult EEG, creating a versatile educational environment for residents, fellows, practicing clinicians, and other professionals seeking to expand their clinical neurophysiology expertise.

The findings align closely with EEGmaster's mission since its inception: providing high-quality, accessible EEG education across diverse practice settings and levels of training. In addition to foundational adult EEG instruction, EEGmaster includes dedicated sections focused on pediatric EEG, quantitative EEG, and intraoperative neurophysiologic monitoring. Recognizing the evolving needs of trainees and educators, we have recently expanded our offerings with new resources in seizure semiology and continue to develop additional educational content in neonatal EEG and intracranial EEG. Our goal is not only to teach EEG interpretation, but to provide a comprehensive learning ecosystem that reflects the breadth of modern clinical neurophysiology.
The study also highlighted opportunities for the next generation of online EEG education. Across the field, personalized feedback, competency-based assessment, learner progress tracking, and program-level educational analytics remain uncommon, particularly among free platforms. These are areas where EEGmaster is actively innovating. Through partnerships with residency and fellowship programs, EEGmaster provides educational analytics that extend beyond traditional online learning. Participating programs can track individual learner performance over time, benchmark trainees against global learners and peers at comparable levels of training, monitor institutional performance, and identify educational strengths and gaps within their curricula.
As online learning becomes an increasingly important component of neurology education, the future of EEG training will depend not only on the quality of educational content but also on the ability to measure learning, provide targeted feedback, and support continuous improvement.
