Welcome to the EEGMaster EEG Curriculum! This site guides you step by step through EEG interpretation, from foundational skills to more advanced concepts, reinforced through repetition, questions, and practice reports. The curriculum works best alongside hands‑on EEG reading with attendings at your institution, but it can also be completed independently if those opportunities aren’t available. Our goal is to help you build confidence in EEG interpretation and reporting. Our content is expanding rapidly, so check back regularly for new features and updates.

- Self-Assessment: Test and deepen your learning with self assessment questions and opportunities to practice EEG interpretation and reporting. For an even broader set of practice questions with associated feedback, we recommend our Q-Bank and EEG of the Week questions
Registration and Access:
- Register for a free account to unlock the full features of the EEGMaster site, including self-assessment tools
- If your institution has asked you to register as a trainee, please make sure to go to update your profile and link your account to your designated Program Officer.
- Note: The Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced assessments are restricted to trainees registered with an affiliated program
- If you are not associated with an affiliated program, you can take the two Practice Quizzes, located under the Curriculum tab
Learning Objectives:
Module 1: EEG Basics
- Explain basic principles EEG electrophysiology, the 10-20 system, and common montages types
- Identify and differentiate EEG artifacts
- If available, observe an EEG technologist perform an EEG hookup
Module 2: Normal Adult and Pediatric EEG
- Identify normal EEG patterns of wakefulness and sleep in adults and children
- Describe and identify normal EEG variants in adults and children
Module 3: Nonepileptiform Abnormalities
- Describe and identify nonepileptiform abnormalities
- Explain the clinical significance of nonepileptiform patterns
- Distinguish nonepileptiform abnormalities from artifacts and normal variants
- Identify EEG changes associated with adult and pediatric non-epilepsy conditions, including encephalopathy and structural lesions
Module 4: Epileptiform Abnormalities and the EEG in Epilepsy
- Identify and describe focal epileptiform discharges
- Identify and describe generalized epileptiform discharges
- Distinguish epileptiform discharges from artifacts and normal variants
- Explain the clinical significance of focal and generalized epileptiform patterns
- Describe the role of EEG in the diagnosis and management of epilepsy
- Identify EEG features suggestive of specific epilepsy syndromes
Module 5: Introduction to ICU EEG Terminology
- Define and identify basic rhythmic and periodic patterns and describe their clinical relevance
- Identify abnormalities in background continuity and explain their implications
- Recognize and describe EEG patterns consistent with status epilepticus
Module 6: Advanced ICU EEG Terminology
- Identify advanced rhythmic and periodic patterns including descriptive modifiers (e.g. “plus” features, bilateral/unilateral independent, extreme delta brush) and explain their clinical significance
- Assess EEG recordings for reactivity and state changes
- Identify brief potentially ictal rhythmic discharges (BIRDs)
- Define and identify the ictal-interictal continuum and explain its clinical implications
Module 7: EEG Reporting
- List the elements of a comprehensive EEG report
- If available, generate EEG reports for attending review and feedback
- If available, communicate EEG findings to clinical teams in clear and concise manner
Module 8: Quantitative EEG (qEEG)
- Describe the basic principles of qEEG and its clinical applications
- Identify commonly used qEEG trends and explain how they support EEG interpretation
- Practice correlating qEEG trends with raw EEG examples (qEEG cases)
